Sunday Snapshot: Light Up the Night

Two weeks ago, Singapore hosted its first ever Sketchers Electric Run. A 5km course full of dizzying colors and scenery, it was quite the sight to see. Even though it would have been more accurately dubbed the "Electric Walk-and-Take-Selfies."

Cafe Hopping: Anthesis

Wrangling with a massive dataset from one of my experiments, I decided to work away from the lab this past Tuesday. Naturally, I strolled over to Robertson Quay to check out one of their many esteemed cafés. This week brought me Anthesis, another café-bistro-bakery (hence the "boulangerie" on the door) concept that seems to be gaining popularity in Singapore.

Destination: Bintan Island (Indonesia)

Bintan Island is one of the most convenient tourist options for Singaporeans. A 45 minute boat ride across the choppy Singapore Strait takes you to Indonesia, where you can spend a few days relaxing at the Bintan Resort area. Looking for beaches and hotel pools? You're in the right place. Looking for anything else? Might want to visit another destination.

Sunday Snapshot: Family Night

I took this picture a few weeks back at i Light Marina Bay 2014. This little guy was especially happy among these giant light-up dandelions. Happy Easter!

Destination: Hong Kong (Hong Kong Island)

Part 2 of our Hong Kong adventure took us to the southern part of the special administrative region (SAR), Hong Kong Island. It stands as the political and economic center of the city, with most of the residents living in the highly concentrated area facing Victoria Harbour, as shown above. We were able to get a brief glimpse of local life, from a floating village to the fast-paced downtown frenzy.

Sunday Snapshot: Happy Time in Thailand

Enjoying some ice cream after touring the Grand Palace in Bangkok, I was also treated to another interesting English phrase in SE Asia. It distinctly reminded me of the "You are Winner" encouragement from Cambodia Angkor Air.

Destination: Hong Kong (Kowloon)

Hong Kong, "Asia's World City" (or so says their tourism board). One of the most densely populated areas in the world, it is a dynamic city with a strong Chinese culture tied with very modern aspirations. It is frequently compared to Singapore, as both are westernized cities that have seen rapid expansion in the business sector during the past 50 years. Promises of delicious food and stunning views were enough to convince me to visit. Our trip had three main parts - Kowloon, Macau (see part 1 and part 2), and HK Island. Here, I recap our visit to the northern part of Hong Kong, the Kowloon Peninsula.

Cafe Hopping: SPRMRKT, where scrumptuous food meets snazzy art

This morning I shuffled on over to Tanjong Pagar, one of the caffeine hubs of Singapore, to check out a place that I've been curious about for a bit. SPRMRKT bills itself as a place where people can enjoy food, shopping, and art in a single space. The combination of fresh, delicious food with a modern vibe made my visit well worth it.

Sunday Snapshot: Sunny Day in Singapore

Last week, my Sunday run through town took me to Marina Barrage, a popular spot for locals to bring a picnic lunch, fly kites, and enjoy the sunshine. This fellow did a marvelous job of sharing his bubbles with everyone within 100 metres.

Brunching Away at Epicurious

High on my "must-visit" café list was Epicurious, voted the best breakfast in Singapore by Time Out Singapore (which provides guides on Singaporean food, entertainment, etc). So off I headed to Robertson Quay to sample out this local hotspot.
