Singapore Philatelic Museum, aka Stamp Central

Three depictions of Kunqu Opera (China)
My weekend roaming took me to a rather curious gallery - the Singapore Philatelic Museum, otherwise known as the Stamp Museum. Here, postage reigns supreme, as the history of the stamp and its cultural significance is documented in great detail.

Sunday Snapshot: Painting the Night Away

This past Friday, NUS Museum hosted a finale to Museum week. With live music, free museum tours, and hands-on activities, there was plenty of art to be had. The centerpiece was this marvelous batik painting that all attendees had the chance to paint. See below for a progression of the lovely banner.

Singapore Airshow 2014

Last weekend, the place to be in Singapore was the Airshow. With our complimentary tickets from the Embassy (thanks Mr. Ambassador), we brought our cameras and snapped away.

Destination: Semarang (Indonesia)

MAN 1, with Emily and her students in Semarang
The remainder of my Java weekend was spent in Semarang, the capital of central Java where Emily lives and teaches English. We spent Sunday touring the town and on Monday morning I made a guest appearance in Miss Emily's first class.

Sunday Snapshot: Beautiful Night in the Neighborhood

A lovely dinner on the 33rd floor of the OCBC building was topped off with some spectacular views of the downtown areas. Great way to close out Chinese New Year.

Destination: Mt. Merapi and Borobudur (Indonesia)

I recently jetted off to Central Java for a quick weekend in Indonesia. This was my first time south of the equator, and we packed quite a trip into the limited time frame. First up - the world's most active volcano and the world's largest Buddhist temple.

Sunday Snapshot: Diamond in the Sky

Architecture-wise, my apartment building is part croissant, part spaceship, part half eaten doughnut. Last night it witnessed a lovely evening sky, featuring an especially radiant half moon. Pearl Bank Apartments has provided plenty of marvelous views so far - like this one.

Chinese New Year: Sights and Sounds from Singapore

Cai Shen, the god of fortune
This past weekend marked the beginning of Chinese (or Lunar) New Year, the biggest holiday on the calendar for both Singapore and most Asian communities throughout the world. This year is the Year of the Horse, so naturally all of the decorations had plenty of equine flair.

Sunday Snapshot: First Sunset of the Lunar Year

I ventured over to Mt. Faber and the Henderson Waves for the first sunset of the new Lunar Year. If this is any indication, we are in for a beautiful Year of the Horse. Gong xi fa cai!
