Neko no Niwa - Singapore's first Cat Cafe

The cats have arrived in Singapore. My friend and I ventured over to Boat Quay to check out Singapore's latest addition to the cafe scene - Neko no Niwa, a cat cafe based off of similar spots in Japan. With reservations made more than a week in advance, we were ready to check out this unique setup.

Sunday Snapshot - Galloping down Chinatown

Chinatown looks absolutely marvelous right now. Lucky coins dangle above New Bridge Road, while bold red horses burst through the median.  But good luck trying to purchase your bak kwa, the queues are the longest they will be all year.

Wohland research team - a global group

My research group at NUS is quite a diverse bunch, Carmen Sandiego would be proud. We come from most corners of the globe, with myself being the lone representative from North America. I developed this map for our group website - http://staff.science.nus.edu.sg/~chmwt/ - so hopefully it will be live on there in a few days. Might spruce it up with additional details, but we shall see.

Sunday Snapshot: Year of the (really happy) Horse

Chinese New Year preparations are in full swing in Singapore, and my room is not exempt. Besides, as a Horse, I must properly decorate, as it will be the Year of the Horse (however, Chinese tradition says that during one's year he or she usually has bad luck).

Thaipusam in Singapore's Little India

Yesterday marked the beginning of Thaipusam, a Hindu festival celebrated by the Tamil community on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai, which falls in January or February. The festival honors Lord Subrahmanya, also know as Lord Murugan, the Hindu god of war and victory.

The festival is perhaps best known for the extravagant and, some might say, grotesque piercings of some of the participants. So, gentle reader, be prepared as I have included a few pictures below.

Sunday Snapshot: Bravo the friendly dog/dinosaur

Today, the featured guest is Bravo, my landlord's dog. I have only seen it wearing this ridiculous dinosaur costume. And by ridiculous, I mean ridiculously awesome.

Sentosa, Part 2: Under the Sea

Besides zip-lining to the beach, we spent most of the afternoon at the world famous oceanarium in Sentosa. The main facility was composed of two areas - the Maritime Experiential Museum and the S.E.A. Aquarium. The aquarium is the world's largest, has the world's largest acrylic viewing panel, contains some species not found anywhere else in captivity, the list goes on and on.

Sentosa, Part 1: Zipline and Sunshine

With the family in town for the holidays, we zipped over to Sentosa Island for some daytime adventures. And once we got there, we zipped some more - via a 450+m (~1500ft) long zip line. Part 1 of our day examines the zip line and cable car attractions.
